No Longer A Slave
Romans 6:11-14
11 In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. 12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. 13 Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness. 14 For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace.
John 8:34-36
34 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. 35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
Slavery to sin is not just a theological concept. It is the experience of every person who has ever felt trapped by a habit, a destructive relationship, a pattern of thinking, or a way of living that they hated but could not escape. Paul's announcement in Romans 6 is that this enslavement has been broken through Christ. John 8:36 affirms that when the Son sets someone free, that freedom is real and complete. There is a difference, however, between struggling with sin and submitting to sin. The redeemed person still faces temptation, but temptation no longer has the final word. You have a new Master.
Reflection: Where in your life do you most need to claim the freedom that Christ has already purchased for you?
Application: Identify one area where sin has felt like a master. Pray specifically over that area today, declaring that Christ is your Lord and that you are no longer bound.
